Are you, like the rest of us poetry bums, in need of a breakdown of what events are happening in and around Glasgow over the next month or so? Aye? Well you’ve come to the right place. Here’s our list of hip and happening places to be and people to see:
25th March, Wednesday – The High Flight LIVE; an excellent evening of poetry, music, high flight zines and story telling. Nice n Sleazy, 7pm doors, £5
25th March, Wednesday – Open Mic Night at the Blue Chair; a relaxed night of music, spoken word, good food and BYOB, free corkage or non-alcoholic drinks for performers, The Blue Chair, 6-9pm, free in. (This will hopefully be a weekly event, every Wednesday)
29th March, Sunday – Rally & Broad: Dance While the Sky Crashes Down!; Yer resident comperes Rachel McCrum and Jenny Lindsay bring you a feast of music, spoken word, and performances from some real Glesga gems: Sam Small and Scottish Slam Champ Bram E. Gieben bring their Apocalypse Redux! poetry show; there’s sensational spoken word from Calum Rodger and Hannah Jane-Walker; topped off with music from No More Tiger! and Josephine Sillars. Stereo Café Bar, 2.30-5.30pm, tickets are £5 on the Facebook event page.
30th March, Monday – Last Monday at Rio; a Glasgow staple, this month Shaun Moore, ‘a radical voice of compassion’ fronts the open mic night. Five minute slots are available, contact Robin Cairns or post on the Facebook event page to nab your spot. The Rio Café, 8pm, free in.
4th April, Saturday – Glasgow Zine Fest 2k15; Underground for the underdog. Zines, books, food, tunes, art, DIY DIY DIY. Spread across Old Hairdressers and Stereo this year, we’re looking at double the fun. Zine fair from 12:00-6:30pm. Bands in Stereo & exhibition in Old Hairdressers to follow. Friendship served all day. Hopefully one of the Aloud team will be there to hand out free (fuckin’ free aye) copies of both issues 1&2 of Aloud Magazine to all coming in through the door. Limited numbers of each left, so come down early and grab a copy while you can. The Old Hairdressers, 12-6.30pm, free in.
14th April, Tuesday – Inn Deep Spoken Word Night; another of Glasgow’s staple poetry nights, Inn Deep is always an excellent night, host Sam Small brings together new and veteran performers alike, whilst firing his own poetry at you like bullets of laughing gas. April’s Inn Deep will be featuring performances from Jack MacMillan, Jordan Marshall, Euan Taylor, Kirsty Nicolson, Doug Garry, and Liam Patrick Hainey (more to be announced at a later date). Inn Deep, 7.30pm, free in.
17th April, Friday – Loud Poets Glasgow: Bucky Sugar Sex Magik; the revolutionaries of Edinburgh spoken word first brought their night across to Glasgow in February. As always, Loud Poets put on a show of spoken word and music from some first class performers. At the start of each night there will be three open mic slots up for grabs (LP rules: no paper, no introductions, three minute time limit), and whoever wins over the #LoudCrowd with their words grabs a slot at the next LPG show. Aloud’s host Calum did so last time and so will be performing at this event! Put your name in the hat on the night or by emailing email@example.com. Broadcast, 7.30pm, around £4, tickets available on the Facebook page soon.
23rd April, Thursday – ALOUD #11; yeah! mother-people! Most likely the last Aloud before University term time resumes in September later this year. Aloud #11 will operate as it always does, a sign-up-on-the-night open-mic for poetry, prose and spoken word, free and open to all. Aloud always strives to create a relaxed atmosphere where performers can come read aloud for the first time, and veteran poets can try out new stuff or bring their tried-and-tested sets to wow us all with. On this night we will also be launching our free zine: Aloud Magazine Issue 03 – filled with literary delights to wrap yer brain around. Jim’s Bar QMU, 8pm til late, free in. (p.s. this is Calum’s last ever time hosting aloud, bring yer tissues ’cause tears will be shed, even if only by him)
